Welcome everyone to social studies at PCA. This year both grades will be studying and researching US history and Civics. There will be selected readings for the students to respond to through blogging. I will be updating parents and students regulary. Please contact me if you have any questions or need my assistance.

Welcome back everyone
Here are some items you will need for social studies this year (7th & 8th):
a) one package of Crayola color pencils - a 12 pencil box is fine.
b) social studies folder - anything is fine as long as paper can be added.
c) a flash drive - this can be used in other classes as well.

Parents, please supply your child (7/8) has a box of colored pencils in order to participate in mapping activities. A small box of Crayola colored pencils cost around a dollar.

7th grade- Students are beginning chapter 3 the ancient America's.
The section 1 quiz will be next week 2-11-10.

8th grade- There will be a test on chapter 5 on 2-5-10.

7th grade chapter 1 test will be on 11-12-09.

8th grade students are working on unit 1 presentations which will begin on 11-17-09.

The stock market game is in progress. Students are having fun investing into the stockmarket.

7th Grade
The 7th grade students will be participating in the national and state Stock Market Game beginning October 5. I have split classes into groups which will have a virtual $100,000 to invest and work with. Parents any information you can give to students about what you know or invest in is appreciated. Any parent that has experience with the stock market and would like to address some classes I would love to have you come. Just let me know. 7th grade will also be covering the middle ages in world history.

9-22 -09 Homework assignment
Read chapter 1 section 1 (pages 8-14) The Byzantine Empire.

8th Grade
The 8th grade will be studying US history up to 1877. In the future plans are to take a field trip to the Junior Achievment Finance Park in Wilmington..

9-22-09 Homework Read chapter 1 section 1 (pages 2-9)and complete the guided review worksheet. There will be a quiz on Thursday 9-24.

7th and 8th grade studens are working on a PowerPoint assignment for technology literacy. They will create a 4 slide presentation identifying a primary and a secondary source. They may work on their project at home but will need to email me the powerpoint or copy it on a flash drive to be downloaded in class. If anyone has any questions about the project please email me at rhudson@pca.k12.de.us.

7th graders are participating in the Delaware Stock Market game, working in teams and competing with other middle schools in the state and region.

7th grade: We are studying Chapter 3 Section 3 this week. We will be reviewing for a quiz tomorrow. The quiz will be on Thursday, February 19, 2009. Friday and next Monday (possibly Tuesday) we will be reviewing for the chapter test. The chapter test will be Tuesday, February 24, 2009 or Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Following chapter 3, we will be begin the Stock Market Game and the power point presentation. More information regarding those activities will follow.

8th grade: We are studying Chapter 8. This covers the federal government and how it works. There will be a quiz on Chapter 8 Section 2 on Friday, February 20, 2009.

7th and 8th grade

In 7th grade we have started Chapter 3 Section 2. We will be reading this section and then having a quiz on it probably next week.

We will begin the stock market game on March 2, 2009.

In 8th grade we are studying Chapter 8- Our Constitution.

7th grade will be studying the Civilizations of the Ancient Americas. First quiz on Chapter 3 Section 1 will possible be on Thursday, January 29, 2009.

We will be competing in the Stock Market Game in Dealware from March to early May. Students will work in teams researching, buying, and selling stocks in companies. They will be competing with other 7th graders throughout the state.

8th grade will be learning about the constitution (chapter 8).

BOTH 7th and 8th grade will be starting a power point project to learn about primary and secondary sources.

7th grade:
We are going to be reviewing Chapter 2 Section 3 and then retaking the quiz due to overall class grades. The quiz retake will take place on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. Please make sure you are paying attention in class and studying to do well on this quiz.

We will take the test on Chapter 2 last this week or early next week. Be sure to study for this test. Next we will be moving on to Chapter 3.

8th grade:
For the next 2 weeks (1/5-1/19) students will be doing an American Revolution project. Students will choose to do a web quest, report, or the history challenge. Presentations will begin on Monday, January 20, 2009. Check with your child to se what they chose. If you have any questions please contact me at rhudson@pca.k12.de.us.

If you are retaking the Chapter 2 Section 2 quiz to improve your grade, the retake will be on Friday, December 19, 2008.

We are beginning Chapter 2 Section 3 this week. Next week we will play a review game for Chapter 2. Following the holiday break, we will review again and then we will have our Chapter test.

In 8th grade we will be going on the Junior Achievement field trip on Monday. Upon our return we will do a small reflection on our work and learning there. We will also have a writing prompt. We will also begin geography next week.

In 7th grade we will be reviewing Chapter 2 Section 2. We will have a quiz on it next week and then begin Chapter 2 Section 3.

We are studying the Civilizations of Africa in Chapter 2. We have just taken the Chapter 2 Section 1 quiz and will be moving on to Section 2.

8th grade:
Field tript to Junior Achievement Finance Park is on Monday, December 8, 2008.
Dont forget to pack your lunch and a bring a drink.
You may wear jeans and a school appropriate shirt.

This week 8th grade classes will be starting a history challenge on colonization. They have the option of taking quizs and a chapter test if they choose to instead of doing the project. Wh ile there is no homework it would be wise for them to research on their own time after school.

History Challenge #1
Research what information and materials were aailable between 192 and 1675. Then, based on your findings, plan an expedition to set up colonization in the Americas. Base your research on the Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Dutch, exploraions, reasons for colonization, and forms of governance and experiences. They may also base their expedition on African experiences. This information can be found in chapter 3 of the American Nation textbook.

7th Grade Social Studies

This week 7th grade students are preparing for the Chapter 1 section 2 quiz on the spread of Islam. In class they completed a review sheet to be used as a study guide, and created quizzes for the class to try out. The Quiz will be on October 4. Next week we will begin the next section on the religion of Islam.

In Social Studies 7th grade students are studying the spread of islam (chapter 1 section 2 in our textbook). There will be a quiz on this on Friday, October 3. They have a study guide that they completed to study by.
